Get creative with scents

When it comes to making your own body lotion, the most important thing is choosing ingredients that are safe for your skin type. You'll also want to decide on a scent for your lotion.

One of the best things about making your own lotion is the creative freedom you have when deciding what scents to use. If you don't know what kind of scent would work best for you, try starting with an essential oil blend.

Essential oils offer a wonderful way to customize your product and create a signature scent. They can be overwhelming if used in high quantities, so start small and add more as needed. Some popular options are peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass, jasmine, and sandalwood among others.

Choose the best essential oils for you

With essential oils, it's important to know what type of skin you have before going in. If you have dry or sensitive skin, for example, you will want to use a different blend of oils than if you have oily or acne-prone skin.

So how can you tell what type of skin you have? There are a few ways:

- Take a look at your skin—if it's red or peeling, that could be a sign that your skin is sensitive.

- If your pores are large, chances are your skin is oily.

- If your cheeks flush easily, then you're probably prone to acne breakouts.

And as for deciding which essential oils to use? It all depends on what kind of lotion or balm recipe you want to make. For example, if the goal is moisture and elasticity, lavender and rosemary would be perfect ingredients—they both contain anti-inflammatory properties. But if the goal is more about repairing the moisture barrier (protecting against dryness), then jojoba oil would be an excellent choice because it contains fatty acids which act as an emollient and protect against environmental stressors like cold weather. Thus using jojoba oil might help with

Let's start with essential oil recipes

There are so many ways to customize your lotion, but one of the most important components is essential oils.

Essential oils can be added to your recipes for a variety of reasons. They're perfect for scent, aromatherapy, and skin care. The type of essential oil you'll want to use will depend on what you're using it for. For example, if you want your body lotion to have a calming scent that helps you sleep better at night, lavender essential oil would be an appropriate choice.

But do you know how much each kind of essential oil is needed in order to make the recipe?

It's not always easy to tell by simply looking at the bottle! There are three different sizes- 1/4 ounce, 1 ounce, and 2 ounces- and they all look alike. Luckily, there's a way around this that makes it easy to measure out just what you need:

1/4 ounce size = 10 mL

1 ounce size = 30 mL

2 ounce size = 60 mL
